Luke does not believe in magic—at least, he didn’t before a beautiful genie appeared in his life. No matter how tempting, intelligent, and fascinating she is, he will not let himself fall in love with a magical creature. She wants to grant him wishes, though, so maybe he can use her help to win back his ex-fiancee.

Dawn has suffered centuries of loneliness cooped up in a brass bottle. Once Luke frees her from her prison, becoming her new master, she finds herself falling in love with him—a crazy thing for a genie to do. Now Dawn must reconcile what her heart desires with what duty demands of her.

On a positive note: it was good erotica...

Dawn, a genie trapped in a bottle and forced to do anything that the one who frees her wants, and Luke, a good looking, rich, successful in life but but in love guy who doesn't want anything, find themselves doing stuff... together.

First off, this is a standard magical girl story with all the stuff that usually happens happening. Guy falls for girl, girl falls for guy, they're from different worlds, each world has problems that they need to solve together, yada, yada, yada... It's all been done before.

Telling a story that has been done before is not a bad thing. You can create wonderful things by riffing on timeless tales. Pretty Woman is essentially Cinderella, but done with a "modern" twist and with no magic involved. The thing about Pretty Woman though, is that it wasn't just about the story. It was also about the way the story was told. It was about the characters inhabiting the story. Yes, it was cliche upon cliche, if you analyse it enough, but because it was told well, it was loved by it's audience. How something is told can make or break any story.

This story, I dream of Genie, wasn't told in a way that appealed to me.

It did what it needed to in order to create everything that a good story should have. It wrote villains who weren't entirely villainous, in other words they had some humanity. It wrote characters who had histories that extend far beyond the scope of the book. The book covered all the beats necessary for a story to have: intro, complication, climax.

What it didn't do, was to mix it well. Yes, the characters were well rounded but the story forced them into situations that a well rounded character wouldn't be in. For example: Luke was meant to be this good guy who thought of Dawn as more than a Genie. He was meant to be someone who cared for her. Yet, for some reason, it took him days before he cared enough to take her shopping and get her out of the harem costume. The story needed her to remain in those clothes, so she remained in them, and Luke became a jerk because of it. All this happened because the story needed that beat. The character became a square peg that was forced into the story's round hole.

I won't go into the other times that such things happened. Suffice it to say that there were more that a couple, and lets leave it at that.

If you can get over that though you will find wonderfully well written erotica inside of this story. The author excels in creating hot and steamy situations for the characters. Read this book for that. It's worth it for that. You can feel the tenderness in the tender moments, and you'll go through the exquisite torture that one goes through when characters tease each other without meaning to. All that happens, yet it's written classily with little to no vulgar language.

I wont go into detail on the big twists or the ending of the story, but I have to say that there will be people who will have problems with them. Some events that happen were disturbing, morally. The ending kind of cheats in it's solution to those problems. But I was fine with it because by then I was viewing the book more as a series of erotic events rather than anything else.

2 giant stars for the beautifully written erotica (I do mean that without any sarcasm). Just dont expect a mind-blowing story, this book isn't about that.

I Dream of Genie edition by Amber Carew Opal Carew Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

This book is of course a nod to the "I Dream of Jeannie" television show where an astronaut finds a genie bottle on a desert island. Like in the show, Luke has come into possession of a mysterious bottle, which is soon revealed as a genie bottle, from which a beautiful woman emerges.

Dawn was trapped in the bottle for centuries, by an evil Jinn that she refused to marry, until she was freed by Luke. Because he was the one to free her, she is bound to serve him and grant him unlimited wishes. He is reluctant to believe her at first but soon accepts that he's not involved in some elaborate prank.

The main characters have good chemistry as they alternately try to fight their attraction. Dawn for her part knows that it's dangerous to give her heart to a man who already has complete control over her powers and even her body if he wants. Luke feels uncomfortable being considered her master and as soon as he fully grasps the situation, he tries to free her. Unfortunately that's not possible. And if he turns her away, she'll be alone in the world, with no where to go and no access to her powers (she cannot use her powers independently anymore, only in granting wishes for Luke).

I loved seeing the romance and attraction grow between the main characters. Both found themselves in an unusual situation and I liked how Dawn (unlike Jeannie from the tv show) had more realistic reactions to the situation she found herself in. And Luke (unlike his tv counterpart) seemed to struggle a bit more realistically with a beautiful woman thrust into this life that was bound to serve him (fighting his desire for her and trying to be careful not to abuse his power over her).

I had recently re-watched some episodes of the tv show and was interested in finding a book with a similar premise. I couldn't have found anything more perfect than this book and enjoyed it immensely. Not the least reason being the author's skill in weaving a great story that had me staying up much later than was reasonable on a work night. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. Since this is a romance, the characters of course have a happy ending. And one I considered very satisfying.

Before purchasing, I worried that the book would be erotica with the genie premise only being a gimmick more than an actual plot. But I'm happy to say that's not what happens (though there are some "intimate situations"). Seeing as I'm the only one to review the book so far, I can only assume that other people are hesitating based on some of the same misconceptions I had. But if you loved the show, you will love this book (which I consider a fitting tribute).
